Belgium: Land of Missing Street Signs

If you lose your way in Belgium, don't count on help from street signs. A survey that checked out 50 cities found that more than half the signs are missing or illegible.

The Belgian insurance company Touring published the survey done in 2017 and 2018 and reported "Half of the signs are old and illegible, or sometimes just gone." A Touring spokesperson compared it to five years ago and said "There is no improvement, even though the municipalities are obligated to have readable street name signs in clearly visible places,"

Touring blames it on tight budgets for municipalities that don't have the funds to put up new signs when they wear out, and on new construction. When that  happens, the sign on the old building is often not replaced on the new one.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
