You may not have heard of Wilson's Promontory, but you likely will. Scientists exploring the area with robot cameras and sensors have found that the area, part of an Australian Marine National Park, shows great similarities to the Great Barrier Reef, long a great tourist attraction and also an environmentally threatened area.
The Wilson's area contains colorful sponge gardens, corals, many fish species and more, according to officials of Parks Victoria which manages the area, which is off South Australia. Steffan Howe, marine science manager for the Park, told the Telegraph (UK) that the area has been known for its above-water landscapes, but there had been little exploration below until recent use of a remote submersible that went down to the 30-100 meter level and mapped the sea floor and life.
