El Rey Archaeological Zone
El Rey is the most important archaeological site on the beautiful island of Cancun; it consists of a beautiful Mayan temple and 47 ceremonial structures. In 1909, it was discovered by the English Channing Arnold and Frederick Frost, who found an anthropomorphic sculpture, and they interpreted it as a noble character where the name "El Rey" (The King) was born. In this archaeological zone, remains of mural paintings and drawings associated with Mayan rituals have been found. "El Rey" is one of the few cultural sites that can be found in Cancun's hotel zone, where you can learn more about the incredible Mayan culture and have contact with nature. El Meco Archaeological Zone.
El Meco is an archaeological site of the Mayan culture. Inside the Meco is "El Castillo'' the largest pyramid of the Mayan culture in the region. From the top of the pyramid, you can see the beautiful island of Cancun and its surroundings which you can not miss if you visit the beautiful Caribbean island. In addition, you can also have contact with nature. This fascinating archaeological zone is located in the municipality of Isla Mujeres at kilometer 2.7 of the Puerto Juárez- Punta Sam highway. Access to this archaeological zone costs $55 pesos.
San Miguelito Archaeological Zone
If you visit Cancun, you can't miss San Miguelito'' this wonderful archaeological site is a settlement that was part of the ancient chiefdom of Ecab, whose main economic activities were fishing, agriculture, salt production, honey, copal, and cotton. Those were traded in a complex network that was dismantled in the mid-sixteenth century with the arrival of the Spaniards to the Yucatan Peninsula. Nevertheless, this archaeological site has 14 restored structures, the great pyramid where the site's main building is located, measuring eight meters high, and small altars. Access to the archaeological site is through the Mayan Museum of Cancun, located at kilometer 16.5 of Cancun's hotel zone, and the entrance fee is $80 pesos.
Templo del Alacrán Archaeological Zone
One of the most hidden archaeological sites of the Mayan world is located on the beautiful island of Cancun, Yamil Lu'um, better known as "Templo del Alacrán'' this archaeological site is located at kilometer 12 of Kukulcan Boulevard, Cancun hotel zone, this beautiful Mayan site has a beautiful view of the beaches of the Mexican Caribbean, it is certainly a must-visit, plus access to this archaeological site is entirely free.
