April 6, 2016: Olympic Cauldron, Vancouver

In 2010 the city of Vancouver hosted the Winter Olympic Games.  As part of the official opening ceremonies, which were held indoors at BC Place, a permanent second cauldron was set up outdoors.  Located at the Jack Poole Plaza beside the Vancouver Convention Center, the cauldron is set against the beautiful backdrop of the Vancouver Harbour and downtown area as well as the surrounding mountains.  After the lighting of the official cauldron in BC Place hockey legend Wayne Gretzky made his way to the Jack Poole Plaza where he then lit the permanent second cauldron.

At a height of 10 metres (32.8 feet) the cauldron stands as a permanent reminder to the spirit of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.  It's illuminated at nighttime in various colours and on occasion it has been relit for events and ceremonies. The cauldron is just one of the many wonderful sights to see within the Vancouver downtown and harbour district.

Thanks for sharing this post. We are heading there next month and can't wait to see this. Enjoyed all the exhibits in Park City, UT. Been getting ready to do some more research on where all the games were held. I know many of them were in Whistler, but not sure exactly where, or if there is a set up like in Park City.  Thanks again for sharing.
