April 2, 2019: Assos, Turkey: A Long History

Assos was founded from 1000 to 900 BC by Aeolian colonists from Lesbos. Located south of Canakkale, Turkey, its settlers built a Temple of Athena in 530 BC. From the temple Hermias, a student of Plato, ruled Assos, Troy and Lesbos. He encouraged philosophers to move to the city. In 348 BC Aristotle arrived and established an academy.

It’s a long walk up a winding street past merchants and craftsmen to the temple ruins. The Christian apostles Paul and Luke also journeyed to Assos as recorded in the Bible book of Acts between 53 and 57 AD.

After taking in the glorious view of the Aegean Sea from the temple and exploring the ruins, I slowly make my way back down the narrow road and make a few purchases along the way.

Turkey is a welcoming country; an ancient land with many mysteries.
