Amtrak to start Berkshire Flyer service

For the first time in decades, there will soon be direct rail service from New York City to the Berkshire district of western Massachusetts, a popular summer destination and summer theatre and music venue.

Amtrak is starting the new service, called the Berkshire Flyer, on July 8 with weekend service through the fall as a joint operation with the New York and Massachusetts Departments of Transportation. It's considered a pilot program. It's set to repeat in 2023, and might be continued beyond that if successful.

The service has been proposed for years, but has only now been agreed to by CSX, which owns the tracks. The service is modeled in part on the Cape Flyer seasonal service that Massachusetts supports for weekend service to Cape Cod.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
