Amtrak, which is putting its fleet of new Acela cars into service on its premium Northeast service, is now turning its attention to the rest of the fleet with a huge order for new trains to replace its 70's era fleet.
Siemens Mobility, based in Sacramento, California, got the $7.3 billion order for 83 trainsets along with spare parts and technical services. First delivery date has not been announced. There's also an option for an additional 130 trainsets to meet Amtrak's planned expansion.
The new trains will be configured for a variety of power options including diesel, electric, and in a first for Amtrak, battery-electric. They will replace aging Amfleet and Metroliner equipment, along with a variety of state-owned rolling stock on lines that Amtrak operates under state contracts.
Among the features are individual power and USB outlets, Wi-Fi, bigger windows and vestibules and a "more contemporary" food service operation, including self-service options. There's also state-of-the-art customer trip information, a digital seat reservation system and navigation display systems.
