Amsterdam: Buzzing about Bees

It's not just raucous tourists Amsterdam is trying to limit; the city also wants to put some limits on honeybees.

Researchers at the EIS Foundation, which specialises in insects and invertebrates, say the city bee colonies, kept for producing honey, and competing with the populations of wild bees that are necessary for pollination of the country's food crops.

EIS says there are about six to seven colonies per square kilometer in the city, and that any more than four threatens wild bees by competing for food. More than half the 360 varieties of wild bees in the Netherlands are considered endangered.

The newspaper Het Parool reports that the city is considering a licensing system, or making some areas of the city off-limits to hives.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
