American joins return to (some) free meals

Sometimes it's hard to tell which direction the airlines are headed; at the same time that the Big 3 are adding barebones 'basic economy' fares to their inventory on some routes, they are also adding some amenities.

American is now joining Delta in offering some free meals to economy passengers on certain routes, starting May 1. For now, that means that AA passengers between New York and the west coast cities of Los Angeles and San Francisco will get a continental breakfast or a sandwich wrap, chips and dessert, or they can pick a vegetarian meal or a fruit-and-cheese plate.

Delta, which tested the waters for reaction with some meals last fall, has made them a feature of some of its cross-country flights, too, including those to Seattle. Neither airline has indicated whether or when it may add more cities. And so far, United has shown no signs of joining in.

Most U.S. carriers dropped their food, including free sandwiches and other meals in domestic economy after 9/11 and the recession that started in 2008. Despite recovering and making record profits, returning food to the masses has not been on their minds until lately.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
