AmaMagna: Danube cruises go supersize

AmaWaterways sent its newest ship, AmaMagna, on its first Danube cruise last week, possibly setting a new trend for double-wide river cruisers.

AmaMagna is about the same length—just over 400 feet—as most of the river cruisers, but at 75 feet wide, it's twice the width. Dimensions for these ships are similar because none can be too wide to turn around in the river and go the opposite way, and their width is determined by the width of locks on the rivers and canals.

Because of its width, AmaMagna will operate only on the Danube, below Passau, Germany because from there to Budapest is the only stretch of river with locks wide enough for two cruise ships, or one AmaMagna.

Despite the doubling in width, the boat will carry the same 196 passengers as Ama's other ships, but Magna passengers will have more and larger public areas and bigger cabins and balconies. AmaMagna is the first built-from-scratch double-wide; another line already has one made by combining two older ships.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
