Along Lake Lucerne

Lake Lucerne in central Switzerland is one of my favorite romantic locations. I have been here numerous times and once was brave enough to drive the circuitous highway through massive tunnels surrounding the entire lake.

This photo I took of a beautiful lady at an outdoor café along the lake shore having a glass of red wine as the sun sets. The second photo is a flock of sailboats on the lake. Steam and paddle boats leave frequently from the city dock and you can take a days leisurely ride (food served on many of the boats) around the lake shores and get off for scenic strolls in the small villages.

Maybe you would have time to visit the famous William Tell 1307 monument in Altdorf at the far end of the lake. Also, Mount Pilatus is a sharp mountain that overlooks Lucerne. Cable cars and a cogwheel railway can take you to the top from the city.  I’ve done both and enjoyed the rail ride with it’s grandiose views.

You can go hiking on Mount Pilatus summit, but when it is snowy and icy the path looked a little treacherous to me. The last photo is a flock of birds perched on the Kapellbrücke (Chapel Bridge) which is a covered wooden footbridge spanning the river Reuss diagonally in the city of Lucerne. It was built in 1333 with many paintings along the length of the bridge.

In 1993, a careless passerby allegedly threw a lit cigarette over the bridge and it landed in and ignited a boat moored under the bridge.  Most all of the bridge was destroyed by the ensuing fire and I was there just a day or so after the fire on one of my visits and saddened by the destruction As the enterprising Swiss wasted no time, they rebuilt the majority of the burned bridge and opened it the following year.
