Airlander gets an airline customer

Spanish regional airline Air Nostrum has signed a contract for 10 Airlander helium-filled vehicles, which it plans to put in passenger service by 2026. It's the first firm order for the vehicle, developed by British firm Hybrid Air Vehicles.

Air Nostrum, part of the IAG group that includes British Air and Iberia, is leasing the aircraft, which can carry 100 passengers with very low emissions and look like two blimps fused together.

As planned, it can fly 7000 kilometres, stay aloft for several days, and use very small amounts of fuel. The prototypes and early production models use small jet engines for steering, but the goal is that by 2030 only electric motors will be used. The aircraft will also need to undergo certification before they can be flown in airline service.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
