Airbus, Lufthansa moving ahead on 'ZEROe' planes

Last year at its annual summit, Airbus announced three concept planes that might point the way to zero-emission hydrogen-powered airliners by 2035, in what it calls ZEROe.

At this year's summit, held last week in Toulouse, France, Lufthansa announced it wants to be the launch customer whenever that happens. Annette Mann, Lufthansa's vice-president for corporate responsibility pointed out that Lufthansa's own research unit has been working with Airbus on the project.

She also pointed out that Lufthansa has already been the launch customer for six of the eleven airliner models in its fleet.

The three models being prototyped for ZEROe include a turboprop that would carry about 100 passengers and a 200-passenger turbofan narrow-body, both with conventional shapes. The third, and likely furthest-away version is a blended wing design that would provide better hydrogen storage and distribution.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
