AAA sees near-record holiday traffic

AAA says 43 million Americans will have hit the road, air or water for this year's Memorial Day weekend, the second-highest since the auto club began tracking in 2000, trailing only the  2005 record.

Despite gas prices inching up to around and over $3 gallon, 1.5 million more were expected to travel this year compared to last, with a total over 43 million. Of that, the vast majority, 37.6 million, were driving, while 3.25 million bought tickets for flights, up nearly 5% from last year.

So many families have stretched the long weekend into a longer weekend or made it part of a longer break that the heaviest traffic comes on Thursday and Friday, before the  weekend officially begins and doesn't really let up until after Monday night.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
