After many stays in France, but never in the far south, I decided it was time. But where? I’d been offered an apartment somewhere in the “Souse”, by Maggie, my favorite Paris hotelier, pronouncing it in her idiosyncratic English. But the timing hadn’t been right and, in any case, I hadn’t seen her for a while. So nothing to do but keep looking until my place revealed itself.
I wanted to visit Avignon and discovered that there was a bus that would take me from there to UzÈs (Oo ZEZ), universally described as a lovely spot, and beginning to sound like it might be the one. Further searches turned up a pretty apartment owned by a man who seemed kind, the price was right and the decision made.
I thought about day trips away but loved my little town so much I couldn’t bear to leave it. I found that not only my apartment owner was kind, everyone I met there was amiable and I could only deduce that UzÈs was truly as it seemed to me, a congenial place for visitors and residents alike. I’d still love to visit those other places and I very well may. But if I don’t, I haven’t been in the least deprived. I’ve followed my own advice by not rushing around in the mistaken assumption that if I don’t see everything, I haven’t seen enough. UzÈs was enough for me.
