A legend returns: Raffles re-opens

Raffles Hotel in Singapore, famed as an outpost of Empire when Britain still had one, has re-opened after closing for three years for top-to-bottom restoration.

The hotel's grand public spaces are still the magnificent vision familiar from film and photos, but the guest rooms have been rebuilt as an all-suite hotel with nine different levels of luxury (spelled p-r-i-c-e).

The hotel opened in 1887, and was declared a Singapore national landmark in 1987, just two years before a three-year shutdown for its last renovation. This time it closed in February 2017.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
