ANA adds Vienna, with Lufthansa links

ANA, Japan's #2 carrier, is extending its reach to European destinations with a non-stop route to Vienna, where it will connect with flights of its joint-venture partner, Austrian Airlines, and Austrian's parents, Lufthansa Group.

The flights will start in February, using a 787-9, and will run daily. It's ANA's seventh European destination, and reflects ANA's expectation that demand for flights to Europe and especially eastern Europe, will continue to grow. Lufthansa Group serves 68 European cities from Vienna, and the airport is known for rapid transfers.

The flights in both directions are timed to arrive in early morning, giving business travelers or tourists as much of the day as possible. The ANA deal with Austrian is only one of a number of such long-distance partnerships; KLM and Qantas have recently agreed on a codeshare connection that allows passengers to change planes in Singapore and then make local connections at either end.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
