Virgin Holidays cuts single-parent families a break

British tour operator Virgin Holidays has a vacation present for single parents traveling with their kids: it's offering packages with no need to pay for a non-existent second adult.

Most cruises and vacation packages are aimed at couples, with or without children, and singles are charged a "single supplement" to make up what would be collected with double occupancy—even if the single is not really a single because of the kids.

Virgin says it's negotiated pricing with 10 popular resorts that will save an average of over $400 for a single-parent family on a Caribbean vacation. Britain has over 2 million single-parent families, and the number is growing.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
