Primera's plan: Low-low fares and high fees

Primera, a Latvian carrier, is planning super low-cost fares to the U.S. from three European cities, but apparently plans to make up the difference with super-priced extras, including inflight meals for $40 apiece.

The carrier plans to serve New York/Newark and Boston starting next year, with A321s flying from London Stansted, Paris and Birmingham, with fares around $99 to $199 each way.

But before you jump on the bargain: in addition to those $40 dinners, the airline will charge $45 and up for checked bags, and  more for carry-ons over 22 pounds. Using a credit card adds $12 to the tab. Oh, and the seat you get? 30" pitch, similar to the tightest domestic flights. For more money, you can get an extra 2", enough to match most traditional trans-Atlantic carriers.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
