July 18, 2017: Marblehead Lighthouse, Ohio

It is as grand as I remember it. I lived in Ottawa County in the early 1970s and always loved passing by Marblehead Lighthouse. There is just something about a lighthouse that is peaceful, reassuring and romantic.

Built in 1821, it is the oldest lighthouse in continuous operation on the Great Lakes. Set on the rocky limestone shore of Lake Erie, the beacon and keeper’s house became an Ohio State Park in 1998. Recently the Lifesaving Station Museum was added.

Surrounded by picnic areas, it is a relaxing and free destination even on the busiest days. If you want to climb to the top of the lighthouse there is a nominal fee.

Marblehead Lighthouse is open daily from noon to 4 p.m. beginning the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day. The lighthouse is also open the second Saturday in October for the Lighthouse Festival.
