21 New UNESCO Heritage sites for 2016

UNESCO Heritage status has been announced for 21 new "sites" for 2016. The quotation marks are because one of the selections is the architectural work of Swiss-born architect Le Corbusier worldwide. The others include locations both large and small, spread across the globe.

The committee that selects them is tasked to consider historical significance, legacy and common heritage, but political considerations are sometimes involved as well: important countries with few sites tend to get special consideration.

A continuing worry for many of the sites world-wide is preservation; in some areas sites have been destroyed in wars and rebellions; in others continuing development and atmospheric changes pose dangers.

The 2016 list selected by the committee, with pictures, can be viewed HERE
