50s 'bubble car' returns as an electric

Good news for fans of Family Matters and of the long-ago BMW Isetta, popularly known as the 'bubble car' and once the vehicle of choice for the geeky Urkel character on Family Matters.

An Italian inventor has taken the basic body shape (whose patent has expired) and recreated it as an all-electric vehicle with a 120 km range and a 90 km/h top speed, and is planning to market it as a city runabout. He has 3100 orders so far for the  €12,000 vehicle; at 5000, he will begin actual production, which is being outsourced.

Most  of  the  orders have come from Switzerland and  Germany, with a few from the U.S. The inventor, by the way, has a track record in small-scale transportation. He's Wim Ouboter, who created the ubiquitous electric-powered Micro Scooter. He's calling his new car the Microlinoi.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
