Royal Caribbean tightens cancellation policies

Royal Caribbean, which has recently had to make some cancellations of its own as storms and a virus have interrupted cruises, is now imposing stricter rules on customers who want to cancel bookings.

The new rules are somewhat simpler: instead of five categories of cruises, there are now two, 1-4 nights, and 5 nights or more.

For 1-4 night cruises, the free cancellation deadline is now 75 days instead of 60 days out; from there to 15 days there's an increasing penalty and at 15 days no refund at all.

Longer cruises have a 90-day deadline, with the 'no-refund' date also at 15 days.

Some commenters on the CruiseCritic.com site have suggested that the new rules might cause some passengers to travel sick rather than lose money, possibly affecting other passengers.

Royal Caribbean's Anthem of the Seas had to cut short two recent cruises because of storms and other bad weather, but one of the cutbacks also involved sick passengers with a norovirus outbreak.
