Gumbo's Pic of the Day, June 1, 2015 : Crowsnest Pass

IMG_4009

I love road trips through the mountains!  Among my favorite drives is to head south from Calgary, through the Rocky Mountains to British Columbia, then on to Idaho's panhandle.  The scenery is simply breathtaking mile-after-mile, hour-after-hour.

Access across mountains is limited because of geography, and the Crowsnest Pass is an important transportation route.  I've driven through this Pass in southwestern Alberta too many times to count. The pass is relatively low altitude and has a gentle grade, providing easy transit over the Rocky mountains well before routes were constructed in the USA and elsewhere in Canada.  The railways really opened the development of the Crowsnest Pass, as did mining.

I recently drove through the Crowsnest Pass on a beautiful spring morning, a little snow still on the mountains and the grass starting to green.  From my vantage point I was able to photograph this picturesque valley with the Crowsnest River winding through it.....

Turning a few degrees from the same spot I saw Crowsnest Mountain....

And a little further several other Rocky Mountain peaks whose names I do not know....

It is perhaps one of the prettiest spots in the Canadian Rockies.  You can see why I never tire of driving through the Crowsnest.
