The house I rented for a month outside Ubud was one of a number scattered around on footpaths that crisscrossed the rice paddies, the sole means of reaching anywhere in the wide spaces between the roads. As far as I could tell, almost all were occupied by local people and this lady seemed to be the blessing person for the neighborhood. From time to time she’d come through the gate and into the garden and perform her rituals without any acknowledgement of my presence. Each visit took a few minutes and then she’d be on her quiet way.
