2-month river cruise to cross the U.S.

American Cruise Lines is offering a 61-day U.S. river cruise that visits 20 states, several national parks, and both the East and West Coasts of the country, the longest river cruise ever offered.

Long cruises, including round-the-worlders, are becoming common in ocean cruising, but river itineraries haven't generally gone that way, in part because of running out of river after a week or so.

American Cruises has leap-frogged that problem by stitching together an itinerary which occasionally uses land transportation to bridge gaps in the river systems on its "Great United States" cruise.

The itinerary starts August 14, 2014 in Portland, Oregon, and ends up on October 14, using three of the company's ships, American Jazz, American Symphony and American Independence. Prices range from $51,600 to $77,945 per person.

Starting on Jazz, the cruise sails on the Columbia and Snake Rivers, including a visit to Hells Canyon, and an optional land package for Glacier, Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. Jumping from Jackson Hole, the passengers join Symphony on the Mississippi at New Orleans. After a cruise up the Mississipppi, the itinerary hops to Portland, Maine, Boston, Newport and Mystic among other stops on Independence, finishing up in New York City.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
