Basilica Menor Católica Nuestra Madre de Monserrate, Ecuador

My wife and I enjoy exploring churches during our travels – be they the grand cathedrals of Europe or the smaller churches of the Americas.
Basilica Menor Católica Nuestra Madre de Monserrate, Montecristi

During our visit to the region around Manta, Ecuador, we stopped in the small city of Montecristi.  In the heart of this community you’ll find this lovely church sitting atop a small hill.  It’s the Basilica Menor Católica Nuestra Madre de Monserrate, a Catholic minor basilica (a title granted by the Vatican) dedicated to the Virgin Mary under the title of “Our Lady of Monserrat”.  The church attracts numerous pilgrims throughout the year, especially during religious festivals, and is an interesting reflection of Ecuador’s Catholic heritage.

The Virgin of Monserrate de Montecristi is a Marian sect which emerged in Ecuador in the sixteenth century.  An image of the Virgin was donated to the church by Charles V, which helped turn Montecristi into a place with religious significance.

Entry doors to the Basilica

The current church was constructed between 1950 and 1962.  The exterior is lovely, with its tall tower visible for many miles (a tower bell was also gifted from Charles V).  The interior is adorned with religious art and artifacts.  While it’s the church of a poorer population, it still reflects loving craftsmanship.  Inside, a focal point is the image of the Virgin of Monserrat, a wooden statue depicting her seated with the Child Jesus, often adorned with flowers and votive offerings.

If you Visit:

The church is open daily for prayer and tours.  There is no entry fee, although voluntary donations are appreciated. Best visited during cooler morning hours, when the light is at its best.  Modest dress is required

At the base of the church is a small market, where you can buy locally crafted souvenirs like Panama hats.  There are lots of restaurants around, known for their fresh seafood
