Barcelona plans a ‘selfie corral’ at Sagrada Familia

Barcelona’s most famous sight, the slowly-nearing-completion Sagrada Familia basilica, is about to get a new feature: an ‘anteroom’ of about 6200 square meters to corral selfie-takers and others and keep them from blocking traffic, entrances and even metro entrances as they search for the perfect Insta.

The space will be created from a portion of an adjoining street, Carrer de la Marina, along the small Placa de Gaudi park. Much of the space there is currently occupied by tour buses and vendors. The space faces the Nativity facade of Gaudi’s iconic building, which is scheduled to be completed next year, the 100th anniversary of Gaudi’s death.

The location will allow people to film themselves with the building as background without adding to congestion, except possibly in the space itself. Work on it will begin after the summer season, and will be ready for next spring.
