Faced with a rising curve of accidents involving e-scooters, injuring and killing pedestrians as well as riders, Barcelona is now requiring helmets and a reduced speed limit fror scooter riders.
In an effort to better protect pedestrians especially, the city has also ordered bikes as well as scooters off the sidewalks, with an exception for cyclists riding with young children.
Barcelona had already imposed speed limits of 25 km/h on scooters and banned riders under 16. Under the new rules, riding without a helmet will bring a fine of €100, and riding on sidewalks ha a fine of €500.
