One of the unifying architectural features of the historic core of Lima were the enclosed balconies which extend beyond the buildings. I assume these provided a cool place to sit in the evening before the advent of air condition — open the balcony windows to catch the cooling evening breezes and chat with the family. This post contains just a sampling of what we saw during a ramble through the area.

The only other city I’ve ever been too with similar enclosed balconies was Valletta in Malta. Perhaps a Spanish influence in both cities.
