At the Marionette Museum, Lyon, France

Lyon’s Musée des Arts de la Marionnette, or Puppet Museum, is one of several museums in the historic Gadagne mansion in Vieux-Lyon, the city’s old quarter.

Its more than 300 puppets include numbers based on familiar European stories and characters, but also include quite a few from around the world are ‘hanging around.’

The museum covers not only the sort of puppets we may be familiar with, but archaeological remnants from many lands; the oldest known object identified as a puppet comes from Czechia, and is believed to be about 25,000 years old.

It’s a fascinating place, and a bargain as well: the ticket also includes the city’s history museum in the same building.
