We ran into this fellow on a balcony overlooking the courtyard of the Alsatian Museum in Strasbourg, a fascinating museum that tries to depict everyday life in the area over a wide variety of periods and circumstances.
But sadly, I went away with no real idea of the mechanical bellringer’s story, and have found none since. The best I can think is that it was either part of a tradesman’s sign, or perhaps served in a church.
