The André Hazes Monument (standbeeld) is a bronze statue erected to honor popular Dutch folk singer, André Hazes (1951–2004), who had earned the nickname of “king of the levenslied” (Dutch folk songs).
The statue was unveiled in 2005, about a year after his death, and is near the Albert Cuyp Market in the neighborhood where he was raised. It was in this market that he started singing as a child, the beginning of his popularity and career. People commonly leave flowers or other small gifts at the base of the statue, a sign of his enduring popularity, especially around his birthday. I guess he was sort of “Holland’s Elvis”. .
The statue is located at the corner of Albert Cuypstraat and Eerste Sweelinckstraat, in the De Pijp neighborhood of southern Amsterdam.
