The Alberta Pool grain elevator in Creston is one of the last remaining wooden grain elevators in British Columbia. It was built in 1935; a second “twin” elevator – a white United Grain Growers (UGG) elevator — was built a year later. These elevators collected, stored, and shipped grains like wheat, barley, oats, and rye grown in the fertile Creston Valley.
The Alberta Pool elevator was largely abandoned in 1982. Both elevators were purchased by the Columbia Basin Trust in 2018 to protect them. As the Alberta Pool elevator was in better condition, restoration work focused on it including structural stabilization, new roofs, lightning rods, siding replacement, etc. The work was completed by 2022 and today the elevator houses a gallery selling local artisan crafts.
