This monastery’s name appears in a 1548 Ottoman register and it thus dates back to at least the 16th century, but it might be even older than that. It is located in a pretty valley just east of the town of Eresos.
The crenelated tower through which you enter the complex is perhaps reminiscent more of a castle, but many monasteries in this region have similar defensive structures.

Pithariou has undergone extensive renovations in the recent past and, at first glance, looks almost like a new construction.

There are potted plants everywhere, enhancing the tranquil atmosphere.

Below is a photo of the interior of the Catholicon, the monastery church.

There is also another chapel a little bit further down the hill.

The monastery offers impressive views of the valley and the surrounding hills. The lake in the photo is artificial and serves as a reservoir.

The final shot was taken from the lakeside as we headed back to Eresos and shows the whole complex as well as its picturesque setting right against the steep hillside.
