If it’s true that ‘nothing succeeds like excess,’ then the giant tiramisu topped with King Charles’ royal cypher that snaked for more than a quarter mile around a London town hall was a great success.
Made with 3,000 eggs and 50,000 ladyfinger biscuits, it was assembled in a giant back-and-forth coil on tables in Chelsea Town Hall last Sunday. Stood up, if it could, it would stand eight times the height of Nelson’s Column at Trafalgar Square, or, if you prefer a building comparison, it would be nearly 50% taller than The Shard, London’s tallest building. Total official length was 1,445 feet.
The record attempt was organized by Mirko Ricci, owner of Complitaly, an Italian-language magazine and news site in London. Ricci set a record in 2017, but an Italian team topped it two years later. He also holds a record for the world’s longest profiterole. Construction of the confection, which also has coffee, mascarpone cheese and cocoa powder among the ingredients, took two days of work by dozens of volunteers.
After the record was certified, the slicers went to work, selling slices for £11.50 and 2-kilo trays for £45.
