A Key West Sunset

Sunsets over the ocean are enjoyable most anywhere you visit, and that’s especially true in Key West where the event becomes a community celebration of sorts.

The best places to see Key West’s sunsets are on the Gulf (west) side of the city.  Here there are a variety of restaurants and bars where you can get a waterside spot, and an assortment of cruises that take you into the Gulf.  If you don’t want to shell out cash and just want to mingle with a crowd head to the end of Duval Street.  At Mallory Square there’s a wide open place to catch Key West’s great sunset.  Arrive early (at least an hour before the sun sets) because it’s popular and you’ll want to get a spot close to the water’s edge.

The activity begins early with many buskers performing for the gathering crowd of tourists and locals.  There’s a great variety of entertainment available, from acrobats to musicians to magicians.  We found ourselves near a gentleman who was a very talented singer/guitarist, who serenaded those around us for an hour as the sun dipped toward the horizon.  It was a pleasant mellow scene.

It’s fun to watch the ships silhouetted by the changing colors of the sky.  Of course, a good cover of clouds really “makes” the sunset and the clouds were sparse that day, but it was still beautiful experience.

After the sunset, the crowd thins and performers pack up to return the next day.  We headed down Duval street to find a place for dinner.
