Just around the corner from Cologne’s Haymarket or Heumarkt is a tavern that stands out at first glance.

Its color, its signs, its windows are all eye-catchers, and it has a reputation for an excellent Kölsch, the local-style beer made nearby by its parent—everything drew me to it from my hotel around the corner. Sadly, though, it was and is closed for renovations.

Unsadly, the surrounding neighborhood and the Heumarkt are rich in other choices, from international foods of all kinds to sturdy Rhenish German cuisine. I did not suffer.

While hanging out in the neighborhood for a few days, I also collected some other tavern signs, some traditional and some not.
