4-day kickoff for Route 66 Centennial

This spring marks the centennial of America’s most famous highway, and the Missouri Route 66 Centennial Commission has a full slate of events for the four-day celebration, April 30-May 3.

The events center on Springfield, Missouri, the officially designated birthplace of the legendary road, based on its role in formally suggesting the name, back in 1926.

Among the events are a live broadcast of the kickoff, with the Today show broadcasting its ‘3rd Hour’ segment as well as dedication of a Birthplace Plaza at the location from which the telegram was sent suggesting the name. The next day, on May 1, a sculpture will be dedicated and later a parade along a section of the route and a centennial concert on a local college campus. May 2 will see an arts festival on a downtown street, screening of a Route 66 documentary and a ball at the historic Shrine Mosque.
