Dutch hit the road to duck high fares

Dutch flight taxes and parking costs at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport are high enough that more and more Netherlands residents have been heading over the border to catch cheaper flights.

The Rotterdam newspaper AD says that the price difference, according to its interviews with travel organizations, can be as much as €600 for a family. That’s comparing prices at Schiphol to what can be found in Belgium or in nearby German airports.

Sunweb, a vacation package company, told AD that 20% more Dutch people are opting for foreign airports to start their May and summer holidays this year, and that 25% of Sunweb’s flights last year flew from foreign airports compared to 6% before the pandemic.

TUI said that over a third of Dutch travelers are looking abroad, and pointed out that flying from Schiphol carries a flight tax of almost €30 per person, while it’s half that in Germany, and only about €2 in Belgium. Brussels also offers super-cheap parking.
