We may or may not have seen the last of Dublin’s most recent, most viral and certainly most whimsical tourist attraction: a random display of tomatoes on a railway overpass.
The scattering of cherry tomatoes, and later larger tomatoes and tomato-related items on the Drumcondra Bridge a week ago Monday has no creator to claim the fame, but pictures posted on TikTok and other social media quickly brought it to fame, and brought it hundreds of visitors.
Also unknown is who, late on Tuesday this week, swept the tomatoes off the bridge wall and onto the tracks below. Stay close to your phones and apps for more—there are already calls for new tomatoes and for police protection for them.
But, while social media posts continue to call for restoring the ‘shrine,’ it appears unlikely in the light of official action. A spokesperson for Dublin City Council said: “Dublin City Council are aware of food being presented on Drumcondra bridge and will be cleaning and inspecting the site daily. It is asked that food is not discarded and wasted in this manner.”
