With the 60th Presidential Inauguration Ceremony scheduled for January 20th, 2025, I thought I would post some of my recent monument photos. The capital city of my nation is replete with many museums, monuments, and historic sites along with restaurants, hotels, and public transportation. Too many to mention, but here are a few. My favorite place to stay every time is in Georgetown, however there is no underground/subway stop within easy walking distance.
First up is the nation’s capitol building where the inaugural event will take place. The building was first occupied in 1800, then through a series of restorations and enlargements, the current building was completed in 1962.
Second is the Jefferson Memorial located on the Tidal Basin of the Potomac River. Thomas Jefferson was the 3rd President of the USA and his Monticello home is just 10 miles from me on the outskirts of Charlottesville, Virginia.
The Martin Luther King Memorial is located on the other side of the Tidal Basin. The memorial dedication was on October 16 (the 16th anniversary of the 1995 Million Man March on the National Mall) after originally been delayed due to a hurricane event.
The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial is also on the Tidal Basin and my photo is of a sculpture depicting a scene from the Great Depression. The FDR Memorial was dedicated in 1997.
The final photo is of the Washington Monument which is the tallest monumental column in the world if all are measured above their pedestrian entrances. Construction began in 1848 but was suspended a few times due to funding problems and the American Civil War. It was finally completed in its entirety in 1888.
