The man who heads the tourism office for Portugal’s snowiest area, the so-called Serra da Estrela, sees a future for skiing all over the country, including areas that never see snow.
Artur Costa Pais, president of Turistrela, told Portuguese news channel SIC that his agency is funding a project to promote skiing all over the country. His plan would depend on snow-making cannons such as are already used at ski resorts to top up the snow.
Pais told the channel that “municipalities would need to open up large urban and tourist centers.” He added that “Indoor ski slopes like these operate all year round, which also exists in Belgium, the Netherlands and Spain. It is a challenge that we are going to make to the municipalities so that they can provide us with conditions in terms of land, access and infrastructure.”
No word from any other part of the country whether they’re ready to be snowed under.
