Avelo Airlines, a relative newcomer, has grabbed top spots for best on-time performance for 2024 as well as for the lowest rate of canceled flights, beating out rivals large and small.
The airline, which began flying in 2021, racked up 83.9% on-time arrivals measured by the Department of Transportation’s metrics, compared to an industry average of 77.6%. Second place went to Delta at 81.9% with United in third place at 78.7%. The year before, Avelo places second with 82.8%.
For the year Avelo canceled less than half of one percent of its flights (0.48%), followed by Southwest, Delta and Sun Country at 0.82, 1.09 and 1.10; the industry average for the year was 1.33%.
It might be argued that Avelo had an advantage in flying fewer flights than the majors and often from less-congested airports, but that doesn’t seem likely to be a major factor considering that fellow member of the Class of 2021 Breeze Airways, which has a similar route network, finished dead last on punctuality and tenth out of twelve for cancellations.
