Ryanair is suing a passenger whose “inexcusable” and “completely unacceptable” behavior on a flight last April resulted in a flight being diverted and 160 passengers to have an overnight delay on their way to vacations.
The flight, from Dublin to Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, was diverted to Porto where it was held before continuing the next morning. The civil suit is asking €15,000 in damages to cover the cost of landing fees, overnight accommodations for the other passengers, and their cost in losing a day at their destination.
The airline said this is the first step in a “major clampdown” on inflight disruptions. Until now, the airline, like others, has relied on banning offenders from future flights. A spokeswoman said that “It is unacceptable that passengers—many of whom are heading away with family or friends to enjoy a relaxing summer holiday—are suffering unnecessary disruption and reduced holiday time as a result of one unruly passenger’s behavior.”
