Alleyways in the Old Fes Medina, Morocco

I’ve never visited a place quite like the old Fes Medina.   In places the medina is a thousand years old.  It’s a city with only walkways and no roads.  The only way to get around is to walk, ride a bike or small motor scooter.  Most everyone walks as the alleys are extremely narrow and crowded.

The old city is a maze that you’re almost guaranteed to get lost in without an expert guide showing you the way.  There are 9,000 alleyways, with 40,000 dead ends.  Many of these alleys are extremely narrow, as you can see from the images in this post.  The newer portion of the city has roads and sidewalks, like all modern cities do, and visiting it is like visiting any modern city and a totally different experience from the Fes Medina.

My guide noted that I kept saying one thing again and again during our exploration of the old city.  “Fascinating”.  And it is.
