Lewis and Clark’s historic expedition in the early 19th century passed through the state of Idaho. I’ve always been fascinated by the men and their journey, and was pleased when I came across this bronze statue on the grounds of the State Capitol building in Boise. It depicts Meriwether Lewis (wearing a three cornered hat) and William Clark (wearing a fur cap) standing with Nez Perce tribal chief, Twisted Hair. The chief is pointing them in the direction of their destination, the Pacific Ocean. Twisted Hair’s young son Lawyer plays on the ground.
A replica of this statue is located of Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho. The sculptor is Doug Hyde, a descendant of the Nez Perce Tribe who resides in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
