For a Palate more Refined than Mine: Catania

Bisected Sea Urchins, Catania Market

Sea Urchins, Catania market

The markets of Catania—Sicily’s second largest city—are bustling and vibrant and so very worth exploring.  In fact, for me they were one of the main attractions of that city.  Most of the food you can buy looked exceptionally good.  Fresh and probably very tasty.

But there were certain items I have no interest in eating.  I’m sure there are those who enjoy these things, but I’m not even interesting in trying them for the first time.

For example, the sea urchins pictured above fit that category.  Snails of any type do as well.

I know there are some who enjoy pickled pigs feet or feet of any type.  Again, I’ll take a pass….

Lastly, while I am a fan of a variety of lamb dishes, I would never ever eat lamb brain.  Prions can reside there, and I want nothing to do with them.

Obviously, not a foodie.

Sea urchins have an amazing briney, umami taste, and they are best as a flavor added to another dish.

Now pig’s feet are just a sumptuous, down and dirty feast in a stew.

I’m with Karl and Marilyn on the sea urchins.

I have a personal rule: On a food tour, I will taste anything offered. But I have to admit, I might choose a different food tour if I knew it would offer sea urchins and the like!

Why take a food tour and dismiss a food?

Uni is the love of my life.

How, DrFumblefinger can you dismiss without a tiny taste?
