Copenhagen: Go green, earn rewards

Copenhagen’s new CopenPay initiative, which starts tomorrow and runs through August 11, is offering a variety of incentives for travelers and locals who make “conscious green choices.”

The rewards include free ice cream, a glass of wine, museum admissions and even a kayak rental; the actions required include some as serious as helping out with gardening or waterborne waste collection and some as easy as showing you arrived by bike, on foot or by transit instead of driving.

Travelers can show proof of train tickets or photos of themselves biking or participating in a cleanup effort, but Wonderful Copenhagen said mostly “CopenPay is built on trust.”

Tourism promotion organization Wonderful Copenhagen says “It is a core task for us to make travelling sustainable. And we will only succeed if we bridge the large gap between the visitors’ desire to act sustainably and their actual behaviour. We want visitors to make conscious, green choices and hopefully end up getting even better experiences while they visit.”

So, free coffee with a paid ticket ad the Museum of Copenhagen, free admission to the Karen Blixen museum for help in the garden, free kayak rental for helping scoop up floating rubbish, and more…
