Gloria Funicular, Lisbon

The Gloria Funicular (Ascensor da Glória) is one of three funiculars in Lisbon and was the second to operate in the city, beginning service in 1885.  It connects Avenida da Liberdade (Restauradores Square) with the charming Bairro Alto district.

It’s a popular tourist attraction, hauling about 3,000,000 people up and down one of the steepest hills in Lisbon every year.  The ride takes 3 minutes and departs every 12 minutes.  The ride costs €3.80 for a return journey and is fun.

The photo below was used as last weekend’s One Clue Mystery photo.  It was recognized by the incomparable George G.  Congratulations, George!

The walls on the street you ascend is covered with graffiti, as is the funicular itself.
